The BMC Lakes Area Meeting & AGM will be held at the Hawkshead Brewery in Staveley on Wednesday 26 November 2014, starting at 7.30pm.
Come along to our quarterly gathering of Lakes climbers and walkers, to discuss the latest issues and get involved in the work of the BMC.
It's also the annual area AGM, so we'll be holding elections for area officers.
Following the meeting, John Porter leading alpinist of the 1970s & 80s, will give a talk about his new book, One Day As A Tiger, which has just won the Grand Prize at the 2014 Banff Mountain Book Festival. The book is not only about the life and times of his climbing partner Alex MacIntyre, who was killed on Annapurna in 1982, but recalls a very exciting period of mountaineering; pioneering the shift away from the large scale expeditions of the 70s, towards a new, bold, lightweight and more dangerous, alpine style on 8,000m peaks.
It is rather appropriate to hear about and celebrate this amazing mountaineer at a BMC event because Alex was the BMC National Officer at the time of his death, and Nick Colton, currently Deputy CEO at the BMC partnered Alex on the Colton-MacIntyre route on the north face of the Grandes Jorasses in 1976. John Porter is also a former BMC Vice-President.
Entry is free. All are welcome. Food will be provided.
Signed copies of One Day As A Tiger will be available to purchase at the meeting.
