The Himalayan Trust UK presents the Seventh Annual Sir Edmund Hillary Lecture at the Royal Geographical Society on Thursday 4 June 2015. This year’s lecture celebrates the 60th anniversary of the first ascent of Kangchenjunga, and will be presented by Doug Scott CBE.
At 8,586m, Kangchenjunga, is the world’s third highest mountain, and was first summited on 25 May 1955 by the Himalayan Trust’s late chairman, George Band and his climbing partner, Joe Brown. Kangchenjunga translates as “the five treasure houses of snow”, the summit deemed to be a holy place. Respecting the people who worship the holiness of the mountain, George and Joe stopped just short of the summit, a tradition that has remained to this day. In 1979, Doug Scott added Kanchenjunga to his long list of mountaineering achievements, and we are honoured that he will be our guest speaker to mark the occasion.
Kanchenjunga region was always dear to George Band, and when he and his wife, Susan, visited it in 2005 the people requested help in improving the educational provision for the children in this remote corner. Since then the Himalayan Trust UK has focused its attention on a school development programme and teacher training, and is about to move into health care. All proceeds from this evening will go to support these projects. During the evening you will be given a brief update on the Trust’s progress and achievements.
