Members and non-members of the BMC are welcome to join us on a walk up Yr Aran on the flanks of Snowdon on Saturday 4 June 2016.

In addition to having a great day in the hills, we hope that it will be a good opportunity for you to meet other like-minded people, and for us to learn from you how the BMC might better meet your hill walking needs.

The excellent vantage point from the summit of Yr Aran will enable us (weather permitting) to view the upper section of Snowdon’s Watkin Path, for which the BMC Mend Our Mountains campaign is raising funds to carry out vital repair work.

The walk will be led by BMC Cymru Area Hill Walking Rep, Anthony Eccles, who is very knowledgeable about the area’s interesting geology and flora.

Where is Yr Aran?
Yr Aran (747m) sits approximately 3km south of Snowdon’s summit, and offers grand views of Snowdon and the surrounding area. The route will initially follow the Watkin Path before taking a direct route up to Bwlch Cwm Llan to admire the view, then carrying on to the top, and returning roughly by the same route.

How long is the walk?
The walk will be about 5 miles (8km) and involve some fairly steep ascents and descents. The path is mostly good but there are likely to be some boggy sections.

Where to meet
We will meet at 9:30am with a view to setting off by 10am at Pont Bethania Carpark in the Nant Gwynant valley. It is approximately 3 miles NE of Beddgelert on the A498 where there is ample parking (Pay and Display) and toilets.

Post-walk drink
There are a number of friendly local pubs for a well-earned shandy in Beddgelert that also serve good food.

What to wear and what to bring with you
Please wear your normal walking gear for a hill walk at that time of year and bring a snack and a drink.  Due to the fact that the ground is likely to be wet in places, gaiters are recommended.   If you are new to hill walking and require advice regarding suitable clothing, footwear and kit, please contact Anthony Eccles, who is more than happy to help, on the email address below.

Booking
It would be helpful if we had an idea regarding how many people to expect and so if you are thinking of joining us, could you drop a quick e-mail to Anthony Eccles at: anthony@higherclimbing.co.uk
