From the origins of climbing in West Yorkshire in the late 19th century, through the contributions of some of the biggest names in British climbing, the lecture will take place at Outside in Hathersage on Wednesday 16 October 2019, starting at 7:00 pm.
The lecture, illustrated by many historic photographs, will focus on the main characters involved: Slingsby, Botterill, Frankland, Dolphin, Austin, the Barley Brothers, Livesey, Fawcett, Dunne, Pegg, Myers et al. It will also consider the history of the development of climbing walls, including the most influential of its era, the Leeds University wall designed by PE lecturer Don Robinson in 1964.
