Ditchling Beacon walk - Peak bagging London and the South East Join us in the South Downs for the third in our 2024 monthly walk series - Peak bagging London & the South East!

Throughout 2024 we’ll be exploring the hills on our doorsteps, finding local adventures, and getting inspired by the landscapes around us. Whilst we might be lacking soaring peaks, the South East is packed with rolling hills, steep climbs and sweeping views. From Hampstead Heath through to the Chilterns, the Norfolk Coast down to the South Downs National Park, along the North Downs Way and over the Surrey Hills, every month we’ll be ticking off the highest point in a different county of the London & South East Area.

In March we are heading south and bagging the highest point in East Sussex. Ditchling Beacon sits at 248m, and offers sweeping views across the South Downs, the Weald, and the South Coast. The walk climbs first to Wolstonbury Hill, with beech woodland opening onto expansive, nature-rich chalk grassland, and topping out with impressive panoramic views. We’ll then join the South Downs Way, heading across to the Jack and Jill windmills before following the ridge line to the peak of Ditchling Beacon. Finally, we drop into the beautiful village of Ditchling and head back to where we started, at Hassocks station.

Walk Details

The walk is just over 10 miles on countryside footpaths and some rural roads. This is a circular walk. We’ll be starting and finishing at Hassocks train station. The start is accessible by train, and there is also a car park if you wanted to drive.

The walk will be led by BMC volunteer Oliver Hicks-Pattison. We’ll start at 9.30am and aim to finish no later than 4pm. The meeting point will be outside Hassocks station, postcode BN6 8JD.
