Join us in this moss planting project on Friday 11 and/or Saturday 12 March 2022, starting at 10am.
Why it’s worthwhile
Winter Hill is the large peatland moor north of Bolton. Damaged by acid rain from the industrial revolution, and recently ravaged by a moorland fire in 2018, the peatland is drying out. Sphagnum moss is a key building block of peat and healthy blanket bog keeps the underlying peat banks safe. Sphagnum traps carbon dioxide hence peat stores carbon and so protection and restoration of blanket bog is an important part of the fight against climate change!
Sphagnum moss, with its extraordinary water retention qualities, also helps reduce flooding by holding back water on the moors after heavy rainfall.
What will the work involve?
We will walk a short distance, about 1km to the work area. Spending around 4 to 5 hours, and working in small teams, we will be planting about 6,000 plants in an area of 2.5 hectares over the two days.

This walk is open to BMC members and accompanying friends, over 18.
All participants must book a place in advance. No dogs.
