Blackdown Hill walk - Peak bagging London and the South East
Join us in the South Downs for the third in our 2024 monthly walk series - Peak bagging London & the South East!
In June, we are heading to the highest point of both West Sussex and the South Downs. Blackdown Hill stands at 280m, with inspiring, timeless views over ancient woodland, flower-rich meadows and a landscape that has been walked in for thousands of years.
Leaving Haslemere we largely follow the Serpent Trail the whole way. This route takes you down ancient sunken lanes, across stunning nature reserves, into Forestry England woodlands, through open heathland and across the Marley, Lynchmere and Stanley Commons. We drop out of the rural oasis right at the end to head to the train station at Liphook.
Throughout 2024 we’ll be exploring the hills on our doorsteps, finding local adventures, and getting inspired by the landscapes around us. Whilst we might be lacking soaring peaks, the South East is packed with rolling hills, steep climbs and sweeping views. From Hampstead Heath through to the Chilterns, the Norfolk Coast down to the South Downs National Park, along the North Downs Way and over the Surrey Hills, every month we’ll be ticking off the highest point in a different county of the London & South East Area.
Walk Details
The walk is roughly 12 miles, mostly on countryside footpaths and occasionally some rural roads. This is a linear walk. We’ll be starting at Haslemere train station and finishing at Liphook train station. The start is accessible by train. There is also a car park if you want to drive, and the stations are a 6 minute train journey apart allowing you to get back to the start.
The walk will be led by BMC volunteer Oliver Hicks-Pattison. We’ll start at 10am and aim to finish no later than 4pm.
The meeting point will be outside the station at Haslemere.
